Dalam konteks biologi, hipertonis merujuk pada larutan atau lingkungan dengan konsentrasi zat terlarut yang lebih tinggi daripada yang ada di dalam sel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ketika sel ditempatkan dalam larutan hipertonis, air cenderung keluar dari sel melalui proses osmosis. Osmosis adalah pergerakan air melalui membran sel dari area dengan konsentrasi zat terlarut yang lebih rendah ke area dengan konsentrasi zat terlarut yang lebih tinggi, dengan tujuan menyamakan konsentrasi zat terlarut di kedua sisi membran sel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Akibat keluarnya air dari sel, sel dalam larutan hipertonis dapat mengalami pengerutan atau plasmolisis.
